An autoclave is a high steam pressure instrument used to kill bacteria, viruses, fungi, and miscellaneous microorganisms to make objects sterile and safe for use. It is used in various industries, especially in healthcare, laboratories, and production, to sterilize equipment, instruments, and different types of materials.

An autoclave is also called a sterilizer because it sterilizes (makes bacteria-free) materials. Usually, an autoclave is operated at three different temperatures: 121°C, 126°C, and 134°C. Steam pressure is automatically adjusted by the instrument according to the temperature value. For example, at 121°C, steam pressure maintains at 15 psi. The process of killing bacteria with a combination of temperature and pressure is called sterilization.

Main Components of an Autoclave:

Pressure Vessel
This is a sealed container where the items to be sterilized are placed, either in a basket or directly inside the chamber. It is made of stainless steel to withstand high pressure and temperature.

Steam Generator
The steam generator may be built-in or separate depending on the design. It produces steam by heating water using immersion heating elements. Safety features include low water cut-off and over-pressure safety valves.

Pressure Control System
A pressure safety switch is fitted to prevent pressure from exceeding the set limit.

Temperature Control System
A microprocessor-based temperature controller regulates and monitors the chamber temperature, ensuring pressure and temperature stability for effective sterilization.

Safety Features
Autoclaves are equipped with overpressure relief valves, low water level protection, overload protection, and over-temperature protection for safe operation.
